Chesterton 346 Scale & Chemical Cleaner
Acid-based scale and rust remover with metal-protecting inhibitor.
Chesterton® 346 is a concentrated, acid-based liquid cleaner (hydrochloric acid base, pH 0.5) with a metal-protecting inhibitor for removing hard-water deposits, limescale, scale and rust. Through the dilution rate, the product covers the range from steam boiler tubes, condensate and circulation systems to the etching of concrete surfaces before coating. The selective acid inhibitor dissolves oxides of copper, brass and iron without attacking the base metal and, according to the data sheet, reduces attack many times over compared with pure hydrochloric acid.

What is Chesterton® 346 used for?
Chesterton® 346 dissolves hard-water deposits, limescale, scale, rust and corrosion. Typical areas of use are steam boiler tubes, condensate and water circulation systems, condensers and cooling units, as well as etching concrete surfaces before coating and removing cement deposits from construction equipment, moulds and tools.
On which materials must 346 not be used?
According to the data sheet, Chesterton® 346 must never be used on aluminium, painted enamel, stainless steel or decorative metals. On the approved materials, the metal-protecting inhibitor protects the base metal, so that oxides are dissolved without attacking the metal.
How is Chesterton® 346 diluted and applied?
346 is concentrated and is diluted with water before use, depending on the application up to 4:1 (water to cleaner). Always add the cleaner slowly to the water, not the other way round. When removing scale in boilers, about one fifth of the water capacity is added as cleaner and heated to a maximum of 70 °C. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with water until the pH value is back to normal.
What safety instructions apply to 346?
Chesterton® 346 is acid-based (hydrochloric acid, pH 0.5). Read the safety data sheet before use. Always add the cleaner slowly to the water, not the other way round, and wear suitable protective equipment. The product is non-flammable and biodegradable. After application, rinse thoroughly and, if necessary, apply a corrosion protection.
