SENN has manufactured forged fork-link chains (drag chains) in single and double-strand designs since 1988 at its site in Erl, Tyrol. Materials: European heat-treatable steels 18MnCrB5 (raised boron content for toughness) and 42CrMo4 (high core strength). Fields of use: drag chain conveyors in thermal and biomass power plants, waste incineration (WtE) plants, the chipboard and wood industries, and cement works. Available with welded-on scrapers, carrier flights or special links — including matching sprockets, wear bars and spare parts. Complete strand assembly and commissioning on request.

Forged link chains

Forged fork-link chains in 18MnCrB5/42CrMo4 EU steel — single and double strand since 1988.

Our fork-link chains and drag chains in single or double strand have proven themselves for many years across a wide range of industries. Typical fields of use include power generation — in thermal and biomass power plants — as well as waste incineration, chipboard production and many more. Since 1988, our company founder has worked intensively in conveyor technology, gaining extensive experience in the development and application of drag chains and fork-link chains.

As the primary material for our chains we rely on 18MnCrB5, since it has a higher boron content than 20MnCr5. This boron content gives the fork links of the drag chains and fork-link chains greater toughness and therefore a longer service life. Our high-performance chains, including the drag chains, are accordingly known for their durability and reliability in demanding environments. We also offer special designs in stainless steel, developed specifically for use in particularly corrosive or abrasive media. These drag chains and fork-link chains are ideal for use in the food industry, the chemical industry and other sectors with high demands on material resistance. Our fork-link chains and drag chains are available in various designs and dimensions to meet our customers' specific requirements. We offer tailored solutions matched to the individual needs and applications of our customers. For more on typical wood applications and related references, see conveyor chains for the wood industry.

                Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

                What is a fork-link chain?

A fork-link chain consists of forked outer and inner plates connected by bolts and bushings. The design is more robust than conventional roller chains and is engineered specifically for high tensile forces and heavy bulk-material loads. It forms the basis for drag chains and many trough conveyor systems.

Why 18MnCrB5 as the primary material?

Compared with the conventional 20MnCr5, 18MnCrB5 has a raised boron content. This significantly improves the hardenability and toughness of the fork links. In practice, our chains therefore achieve considerably longer service lives under impact and shock loading — decisive in ash, clinker and wood-chip applications.

Single or double strand — when to use which?

Single-strand designs are the economical solution for medium conveying widths and moderate loads. Double-strand arrangements distribute the load across two parallel chains and allow wider troughs as well as higher conveying capacities — standard for large power-plant and WtE applications.

                Are stainless steel versions available?

Yes. For corrosive, abrasive or food-contact applications we supply fork-link chains in stainless steel 1.4301 (AISI 304) or 1.4404 (AISI 316L). Typical fields of use are the food and chemical industries as well as plants handling aggressive media.

Does SENN also supply the matching sprockets?

Yes — chain and sprocket come from the same production in Erl. We manufacture single-piece and multi-piece drive sprockets with hardened tooth segments to match the pitch and geometry of your fork-link chain. This ensures optimal material pairing and maximum service life.
