Increasing Pump Performance and Availability with Chesterton® DualPac® 2212 Packing

In waterworks or wastewater treatment plants, there are numerous pumps across all industries. Wherever drinking water, process water, and wastewater need to be moved, pumps are in operation, many of them running continuously. No municipal or industrial wastewater treatment plant can afford frequent, time-consuming pump downtimes.

Chesterton offers packing solutions for rotating equipment across a wide range of industries. In this article, however, we would like to highlight the performance of our DualPac® 2212 pump packing. In combination with a SpiralTracTM packing device, these two products help plants reduce maintenance costs.

Patented Braiding Technology of High-Performance Fibers – Chesterton DualPac 2212 Packing

Conventional pump packings require regular adjustment to control leakage.

Using a patented braiding process, Chesterton combines elastic and wear-resistant para-aramid fibers with temperature-resistant meta-aramid fibers to create a unique braided packing material.

The fibers are braided separately on each side of the packing, so that the properties of these high-performance fibers are individually utilized for the shaft side and the stuffing box side. The orientation of this two-color packing in the stuffing box can be varied depending on requirements. For example, heat-resistant fibers with a low friction coefficient are used on the shaft side. The high-strength, elastic fibers act outward and provide reliable sealing even under varying stuffing box pressure. The packing remains well pressed against the shaft and contributes to minimizing stuffing box adjustment, reducing leakage, and decreasing shaft scoring.

The Chesterton DualPac 2212 packing offers these performance features:

  • Heat-resistant fibers help minimize stuffing box adjustments and prevent over-tightening
  • Higher stuffing box pressure possible
  • Outstanding sealing performance and extrusion resistance in one packing
  • Lower leakage rates than conventional packings
  • User-friendly: easy to cut, install, and maintain

The result of these product properties is fewer stuffing box adjustments and lower maintenance costs.

The SpiralTracTM Packing Device Removes Solid Particles from the Stuffing Box

We complement the performance of the DualPac 2212 packing with SpiralTracTM technology to remove solids from the sealing environment and prevent wear on the shaft sleeve. By using a flow controller, the required amount of flush water can be reduced by 60% or more.

Many pumped media contain solid particles. Examples include sludge, wastewater, river water, etc. The problem with solids is that they cause excessive wear on the shaft sleeve. The solids typically settle at the interface between the rotating shaft sleeve and the compression packing as they migrate through the stuffing box. This reduces the mean time between failures (MTBF) and increases maintenance costs.

The SpiralTracTM device is highly effective at minimizing the effects of solid particles in the stuffing box. The SpiralTracTM device uses a spiral groove design and, in combination with the clean water flush, exerts centrifugal force on the pumped medium entering the stuffing box. The centrifugal force applied to the pumped medium and the incoming flush effectively removes the solid particles present in the pumped medium by directing them into an exit groove.

Conclusion

The combination of DualPac 2212 packing and the SpiralTracTM device, also known as Chesterton® "SuperSets", is an effective solution to significantly increase packing life and reduce pump maintenance costs.
