Superwool® XTRA | Alkaline Earth Silicate Fiber Mats
Superwool® XTRA Blankets by Morgan Advanced Materials with 1450°C classification temperature. Does not form respirable crystalline silica (RCS) at high temperatures.
Superwool® XTRA Blankets by Morgan Thermal Ceramics achieve a classification temperature of 1450°C and a melting point of 1650°C. The decisive advantage: no formation of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) under high-temperature exposure — setting XTRA fundamentally apart from all RCF products and making it the safest choice for high-temperature applications.

1450°C Classification
Highest classification temperature in the Superwool® family. Melting point at 1650°C (3000°F).
Biosoluble
Exonerated from classification as carcinogenic under Note Q of EU Regulation EC/1272/2008 (CLP). No GHS warning labels required.
PRODUCT TYPE
Superwool® XTRA Blankets are needled high-performance mats made from biosoluble high-temperature wool. With a classification temperature of 1450°C, they represent the highest-performing variant in the Superwool® family. The blankets are exclusively inorganic — no binder, no lubricant. No smoke or fumes are generated when exposed to heat. Available in densities of 96, 128 and 160 kg/m³.
MATERIAL
Superwool® XTRA is based on a proprietary alumina-silica-potassium-zirconia formulation that differs fundamentally from the CaO/MgO-based AES chemistry of Superwool® Plus and Prime. This specific composition prevents the formation of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) under high-temperature exposure — the central safety advantage over conventional RCF and AES fibers.
Morgan Thermal Ceramics
Morgan Advanced Materials plc (Morgan Thermal Ceramics division) is one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-temperature insulation products. The patented Superwool® fiber technology has been developed over more than 20 years and provides biosoluble alternatives to conventional refractory ceramic fibers (RCF). Superwool® XTRA represents the latest generation — with the highest classification temperature and the additional advantage of not forming crystalline silica.

Superwool® XTRA Blankets offer the highest classification temperature in the entire Superwool® product family. The proprietary alumina-silica-potassium-zirconia formulation prevents the formation of respirable crystalline silica (RCS) under high-temperature exposure — a decisive advantage over all conventional RCF products. Superwool® XTRA Blankets contain no binder or lubricant and do not emit fumes or odor when first heated. The blankets are pliable, easy to cut and simple to install. Superwool® XTRA Blankets exhibit excellent thermal stability and retain their fibrous structure up to the maximum continuous use temperature.
APPLICATIONS
- RCF replacement in high-temperature industrial furnaces
- Petrochemical: ethylene crackers, reformers, delayed cokers

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Superwool® XTRA and how does it differ from conventional ceramic fiber products?
Superwool® XTRA is a high-temperature fiber blanket by Morgan Advanced Materials with a classification temperature of 1450°C. The key difference from conventional RCF products: XTRA does not form respirable crystalline silica (RCS) under high-temperature exposure. The fiber is biosoluble and exonerated from classification as carcinogenic under Note Q of EU Regulation EC/1272/2008 (CLP).
Why is the absence of RCS formation in Superwool® XTRA so important?
Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) develops in many high-temperature fibers after prolonged heat exposure and is classified as carcinogenic. Superwool® XTRA does not form RCS due to its proprietary alumina-silica-potassium-zirconia formulation — even at temperatures up to 1450°C. This significantly reduces health risks for maintenance personnel and simplifies compliance with occupational health regulations.
How does Superwool® XTRA differ from Superwool® Plus and Superwool® Prime?
Superwool® Plus (1200°C) and Prime (1300°C) are based on a CaO/MgO/SiO₂ chemistry. Superwool® XTRA uses a different formulation of Al₂O₃, SiO₂, K₂O and ZrO₂. XTRA achieves the highest classification temperature in the Superwool® family at 1450°C and is the only product that does not form crystalline silica.
Is Superwool® XTRA biosoluble and what is its regulatory classification?
Yes, Superwool® XTRA is biosoluble. The fiber meets the criteria of Note Q of EU Regulation EC/1272/2008 (CLP) and is therefore exonerated from classification as carcinogenic. No GHS warning labels are required.
What applications is Superwool® XTRA suitable for?
Superwool® XTRA is suitable as an RCF replacement in high-temperature industrial furnaces, in the petrochemical industry (ethylene crackers, reformers, delayed cokers), in iron and steel (launder covers, ladle back-up insulation), in ceramics (kiln linings), and in power generation (HRSG, stack insulation). Particularly suitable for applications where crystalline silica formation must be excluded.
